Mexico Chooses Claudia Sheinbaum as First Woman President

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Claudia Sheinbaum is set to become Mexico's first female president in 200 years.

Sheinbaum, chosen to follow current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, promised to keep his policies.

However, as a calm scientist, she brings a different style and marks a change from Mexico's male-dominated politics.

“I promise that I am not going to let you down,” Sheinbaum said, greeting supports in Mexico City’s colonial-era main plaza, the Zocalo.

The head of the National Electoral Institute announced that Sheinbaum received between 58.3% and 60.7% of the votes.

Opposition candidate Xóchitl Gálvez got between 26.6% and 28.6%, and Jorge Álvarez Máynez received between 9.9% and 10.8%. Sheinbaum’s Morena party is also expected to keep its majority in both houses of Congress.
